This weekend Texas Governor Gregg Abbott announced he was authorizing the adjutant general of the Texas Guard to arm National Guard personnel at military facilities across the state.

The move comes after an attack on military facilities in Chattanooga that left 5 servicemen dead.

In a press release the Texas governor said, “it is with a heavy heart that I issue this order.”

Gov. Abbott joins at least 5 other United States governors who’ve made similar declarations in states like Florida, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Indiana.

Abbott said “Arming the National Guard at these bases will not only serve as a deterrent to anyone wishing to do harm to our service men and women, but will enable them to protect those living and working on the base.”
