Act Locally Waco - Events May 17 - 23


This week on Act Locally Waco, host Ashley Thornton talks about the events for budding entrepreneurs in Waco and other community involvement happenings. 

Learning Opportunities For Entrepreneurs: 

The Work of Artists – Step 1: Build a Base   Creative Waco is offering a three-part series on helping you build your creative career.   

The first class is called “Building a Base.”  Come by Hustle Co-Working at 605 Austin Ave tonight, May 17, at 6:30 p.m. for a free introduction to the program.  If you decide you like it, the class is tomorrow, May 18, from 10 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. and tuition is $30.  The class will cover how to dig deeply into what you’re really selling, what makes your work unique and how to fit your creative business into your life right now. Storytelling Challenge Workshop: Use the power of story for your business’s social media marketing 

On Tuesday, May 21, Be Known Photography and WacoWork co-working space at are co-hosting a “Story Telling Challenge and Workshop.”  The goal of the workshop will be to teach you how to use the power of story and a personal brand for your business's social media marketing. The workshop will also be the kick off to the Story Telling Challenge that will run from May 22 – June 4th.   The workshop is free.  It will take place Tuesday from 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at Waco Work Co-Working Space, which is located at 600 Columbus Avenue. Saturday Events: 

Waco ReStore Half Price Brick Sale (Waco ReStore) 

Start your morning on May 18 at the Habitat ReStore. If you are not familiar with the ReStore,it is located at 1224 Franklin Avenue.  They collect leftover building supplies and re-sell them to the public at amazing prices, with all proceeds going to help support Waco Habitat for Humanity.  Tomorrow from 9 a.m - 3 p.m. they are having one of their most popular sales of the year – the summer half-price brick sale.  So, pick up a truck load of bricks for all your summer building projects. 

Fish Fry benefiting Urban Reap (Mission Waco Urban Reap)

For lunch, head over to the Jubilee market at the corner of Colcord and 15thStreet for the Mission Waco Urban Reap Fish Fry. You’ll enjoy a delicious fish plate, get a chance to look around at the aquaponics greenhouse, browse the plants for sale and visit the Jubilee Food Market's 2019 Celebrate Health Event.  Tickets are $10 and you can purchase them from the link on the Facebook event page or at the greenhouse. 

Pints in the Park (City of Waco Parks and Recreation) 

Tomorrow afternoon, May 18, everyone is invited to Pints in the Park.  This is a fundraiser that helps pay for our beloved Brazos Nights free Concert series.  Pints in the Park features an afternoon of Texas pitmasters, craft breweries and backyard games – along with terrific live music from Texas songwriter Paul Cauthen and Grammy nominated bluegrass band Wood & Wire. Tickets range from $60 for VIP, to $35 for BBQ and Beer, and $15 for concert only. The whole event takes place at Brazos Park East on Martin Luther King Blvd. Check pintsintheparkwaco.com for the schedule and other details. 

Boots on the Brazos: ARC of McLennan County Fundraising Event (ARC of McLennan County ) 

And tomorrow, May 18,  you can also two-step the night away at Boots on the Brazos. This annual event takes place at the Waco Convention Center in the Brazos Room and includes a BBQ dinner at 7 p.m. with Music and Dancing starting at 8 p.m.  It’s a fundraiser for the ARC of McLennan County which is an organization dedicated to expanding opportunities for care and support for people and families impacted by intellectual and developmental disabilities. Tickets are $100 a person.

Mayborn Museum New Volunteer Interest Meeting (Mayborn Museum Complex) 

Besides all the Saturday happenings, The Mayborn Museum is having a New Volunteer Interest Meeting at the Museum on Tuesday, May 21, from 1:30 p.m.– 3 p.m.  

Compassion 25th Anniversary Open House (Compassion)

On Thursday, May 23, Compassion Ministries is celebrating their 25thanniversary with an open house at their facility at 1421 Austin Avenue. The goal of Compassion is to reintegrate homeless families and families on the verge of homelessness into permanent housing and employment.  The open house will take place from 5 p.m.-7 p.m., and they will be opening a time capsule from 2004 at 6 p.m. 

Events for Enjoyment: 

First Annual Music Association of Central Texas (MACT) Music and Arts Festival: Block Party on Austin Avenue 

If you are just looking to get out and have some fun, we’ve got you covered there too… Be sure to swing by Sunday afternoon, May 19, to check out the first ever Music Association of Central Texas (MACT) Music and Arts Festival and Block Party on Austin Avenue.  The party will take place from 2 p.m. - 8 p.m. on Austin Avenue between 7th and 8th streets and it will include Artist's booths, kids activities, and live music on the block and in venues all along Austin Avenue.  

Brews and Brushes – May – Paint YOUR Pet! 

And on Thursday, May 23, you are invited to Paint YOUR Pet!  Well, not actually paint your pet, but paint a picture of your pet… This is part of Bare Arms Brewing's “Brews and Brushes” series of get togethers.  To sign up, visit the Bare Arms Brewing Facebook page and find the Brews and Brushes event.  Buy your ticket and you will be instructed to email a headshot of your pet to the Brews and Brushes teacher, who will make a sketch for you. When you arrive on Thursday, enjoy a fun evening of completing the portrait with the materials available. Tickets are $30 and $10 from each ticket sold will be donated to the Humane Society of Central Texas.
