Act Locally Waco - Events June 21 -27, 2019


This week on Act Locally Waco, host Ashley Thornton is back to bring us free arts events like the Summer Solstice Drum Circle and Summer Indie Movies, as well as events for families like celebrating World Camel Day at the Waco Mammoth National Monument. 

Free Arts Events:

Summer Solstice Drum Circle Fri June 21st

Today, June 21st, is the summer solstice and you are invited to drum in the summer at a Summer Solstice Drum Circle.  The event starts at 6 pm at the Art Forum of Waco at the corner of 18th and Morrow.  Spare drums are available, but bring spares if you can share. 

Art Reception: Texas Fine Artists (Carleen Bright Arboretum) Sun June 23rd

On Sunday, June 23rd, if you are looking for a relaxing, artful afternoon activity, check out the Art Reception at the Carleen Bright Arboretum Whitehall Center. Hosted by the Texas Fine Artists group, the June exhibit features a selection of local artists.  The reception will take place from 1:30 pm to 3 pm. 

Summer Indie Movies: The Idea of Manhood (Deep In the Heart Film Festival) Mon June 24th

On Monday evening, June 24th, you can take advantage of the free indie movie series at the Hippodrome.  Every Monday through the summer the Deep in the Heart Film Festival is hosting a free indie movie.  The shows start at 7 pm. This Monday’s film is “The Idea of Manhood.”  It’s the story of two old friends who unexpectedly spend one day together.  Check out the Deep n the Heart Film Festival website for the full calendar. 

Midsummer Night’s Concert Series: Texas Heatwave Band (Carleen Bright Arboretum) Wed June 26th & River Sounds: Little Joe Y La Familia (MCC) Thu June 27th

Wednesday and Thursday there will be free live music in town.  On Wednesday, June 26th, the Midsummer Night’s Concert Series at the Carleen Bright Arboretum presents the Texas Heatwave Band. Then on Thursday, June 27th, the MCC River Sounds concert series continues at the Ball Performing Arts Center on the McLennan Community College Campus.  The show this week will be Little Joe Y La Familia.  Both shows start at 8:00 pm and both shows are free! 

Kids & Family Events:

Celebrate World Camel Day at the Waco Mammoth National Monument (Waco Mammoth National Monument) Sat June 22nd

Meet live camels, participate in camel story time, do some camel related arts and crafts for World Camel Day taking place tomorrow, June 22nd, at the Waco Mammoth National Monument. Camels are the second most common fossils discovered at the Mammoth Site.  The celebration will take place from 10 am to 2 pm. The camel related activities are free, but there is a $5 fee to tour the dig site.  

Family Night: Keep Waco Beautiful—Turn Trash into Treasure (West Waco Library) Thu June 27th

Libraries have something to do just about every day in the summer, so be sure to check out the calendar on the Waco Library website for a long list of events. On Thursday evening, June 27th, from 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm  at West Waco Library.  Keep Waco Beautiful Executive Director, Ashley Millerd, will be reading a book about taking care of the environment and kids will get a chance make some recycled crafts.

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Jr. (Waco Civic Theatre) & Waco Children’s Theatre: Annie Kids and Disney Frozen Jr. (Waco Children's Theatre) Thu June 27th thru Sun June 30th

The Waco Civic Theatre on Lake Air presents Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Junior, and the Waco Children’s Theatre is presenting two shows for the price of one – Annie Kids and Disney's Frozen Jr. Their performances will take place at the Lee Lockwood Library and Museum on Waco Drive. Both shows open at 7 pm on Thursday, June 27th, and will run through June 30th. Tickets are $12. 

Getting Involved Events: 

Mission Waco Celebrate Health (Mission Waco Mission World) Sat June 22nd

Tomorrow, June 22nd, from 10 am– 1 pm, Mission Waco is hosting a big health fair in the Jubilee Food Market parking lot.  There will be all kinds of health services like vision screenings, blood pressure checks, healthy food tasting and registration for youth programs. It’s also a great opportunity to learn about every health-related organization in town. The Jubilee Food Market is at the corner of Colcord and 15th. 

CASA 101- 5:30 pm (CASA, Court Appointed Special Advocates) ⟶ Mon June 24th

On Monday, June 24th, CASA of McLennan County is offering their CASA 101 training. CASA stands for “Court Appointed Special Advocates” and CASA volunteers are people who work with children who might otherwise slip through the cracks in an overburdened foster care system. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, you ae invited to CASA 101 training Monday at 5:30 pm.  The training takes place at the CASA offices at 1001 Washington Avenue.  If you can’t make it Monday, don’t worry -  there are several more opportunities throughout the year, just check out the CASA website for dates. 

Cultivate Days (Cultivate 7Twelve benefit) (Cultivate 7Twelve and friends) 
Thu June 27th thru Sun June 30th

If art is your thing, you are probably very familiar with Cultivate 7Twelve. In the 20 short months since they opened on Austin Avenue they have become a hub for the visual arts, live music and even provided space for dance and yoga along with lots of other terrific arts events. This Thursday, June 27th, they are kicking off a 4-day participatory arts extravaganza called “Cultivate Days. ” It will be fundraiser for the popular arts space.  Visit the Cultivate 7Twelve website to find out about a plethora of different fun classes you can take – everything from yoga, to flower arranging, to oil painting, to ballet for adults, and many more.  Sign up for a class and the money goes to benefit Cultivate 7Twelve.  There will also be art for sale and several live music events.  Cultivate Days will take place from June 27 through June 30.  Visit the Cultivate 7Twelve's website for details about schedules, prices and other information.
