On Tuesday, President Trump nominated state senator Brian Birdwell to serve as an Assistant Secretary of Defense.
The six-term state senator announced earlier this year he would not seek reelection for State Senate District 22. He currently chairs the Border Security Committee.
If confirmed by the US Senate, this would mark a return to the Pentagon for Birdwell who served as a military aide to the Army during the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. He served in the army for 20 years, and received a purple heart, bronze star and legion of merit.
