SHOUT! Black Gospel Music Moments - The Georgia Mass Choir

The Georgia Mass Choir conduct a master class on the power of gospel music with their live version of “I’m Going to Hold Out.”

In the early 1980s, mass choirs were the thing. Led by Walter Hawkins and the Love Alive Choir, the Mississippi Mass Choir and the powerful Georgia Mass Choir, they dominated the gospel music charts and airwaves ... and introduced a host talented singers and songwriters to the world. The Georgia Mass was particularly blessed to have both Milton Biggham and James Bignon as directors, writers and frequent lead singers.

The group was affiliated with the Gospel Music Workshops of America and like many GMWA releases, much of their best work was recorded live. The two-LP set from 1984, I’m Going to Hold Out,” contains just 12 songs, including the 7 and half minute title track, which is a master class on the power of gospel music.
