Welcome to Shout! Black Gospel Music Moments. I’m Robert Darden.
Founded in 1991, the Blackberry Records gospel label, founded by Doug Williams of the famed Williams Family, continues to release first rate music today. While it is best known for the Williams Family, other artists on Blackberry through the years have included the legendary Canton Spirituals, Kenton Rogers, and Pastor Murphy Pace III and the Voices of Praise.
In 1992, the label released a wonderful Christmas album, Down Home in Mississippi – the title track, which features the Williams and the Cantons – is actually a funky Winans’-styled tribute to the small pleasures of this most magical season.
Music: Blackberry Family, Down Home Christmas in Mississippi LP, Williams Brothers and Canton Spirituals, “Down Home Christmas in Mississippi,” Track 1, Side 2 (3:50 minutes)
I’m Robert Darden … “Shout! Black Gospel Music Moments” is produced by KWBU and the Black Gospel Music Preservation Program at Baylor University Libraries.
