From giving back to the community to enjoying good food to celebrating Black History Month, there's something for everyone this week in Waco!

Fri, Feb 7 – 6 PM - Retrospect: HeART of the Homeless Art Exhibit

Every week is a good week to do some good and support causes that are important to you! Tonight, you are invited to offer some support for the Salvation Army -- Stop by for a retrospective exhibit of art from the Heart of the Homeless art project. Throughout 2019, the Art Center of Waco and the Salvation Army of Waco worked together to provide a creative outlet for visitors at the Salvation Army’s community kitchen. The exhibit tonight will be selected works from that project. Works will include acrylic paintings, graphite pencil and pastel drawings, poetic reflections, architectural wood sculptures, and much more. The exhibit will take place from 6 to 7:30 PM at The Salvation Army building at 300 Webster.

Sat Feb 8, 8am – Special Needs Conference and Resource Fair

Tomorrow, the PATH project which is a part of the Partners Resource Network is hosting a Special Needs Conference and Resource Fair. The purpose of the PATH Project is to empower individuals with disabilities and their families to be effective advocates and decision makers. The Special Needs Conference and Resource Fair is a chance for parents and other community members to learn about resources available for the special needs community in Waco. The conference will take place at First Woodway Baptist Church located at 101 N. Richie Road in Woodway. It will run from 8am – 4pm, and it is free to all who attend.

Sat Feb 8, 8-10am – Short Stacks for a Tall Cause

Tomorrow morning you have a good excuse to indulge in pancakes for breakfast. Mission Waco is hosting a “Short Stacks for a Tall Cause” pancake breakfast. All proceeds will support the Mission Waco Creative Arts Program. The breakfast will take place from 8 AM until 10 AM at Appleby’s on Valley Mills. Tickets are $12.

Tue Feb 11, 5 PM – 7:30 – Pasta with the Pack

On Tuesday You are invited to support Pack of Hope at their 8th annual spaghetti dinner! Pack of Hope is a local non-profit that sends backpacks of food home with school children who might not otherwise have enough to eat over the weekend. The spaghetti for the dinner is provided by Poppa Rollo's, and will be served in the “Outback,” party room behind the Poppo Rollo’s restaurant on Valley Mills Drive. Tickets are $20.00 for adults and $15.00 for children under 12 and 100% of the proceeds will go to support Pack of Hope. Dinner will be served from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Thurs Feb 13, 6-7pm – Young Men’s Service League Informational Meeting

Thursday evening, The Young Men’s Service League will be hosting an informational session. They will discuss their mission of helping young men and their mothers get involved in the community. The meeting is open to incoming freshmen boys and their mothers and will be held at the home of one of the members, please visit the Act Locally Waco website or the Young Men’s Service League Waco Chapter Facebook page for details about the location.

Thurs/Fri Feb 6-7, 7:30pm – MCC Black History Month Concert

As I am sure you are aware, February is Black History Month. Please visit the Act Locally Waco website for a list of the many activities going on around town to celebrate Black History. Here are a few that are happening this week. The Visual & Performing Arts department at McLennan Community College presents a concert in honor of Black History Month tonight at the Ball Performing Arts Center. Titled “We Have Come This Far: An Inspirational Evening,” the show will include spirituals, opera, R&B, Jazz and Hip Hop. The performance starts at 7:30. Tickets are $8.

Sat Feb 8, 7pm – 16th Annual Step Show – Battle of the Burning Sands

Tomorrow evening, The Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity at Baylor University is hosting the 16th annual Battle of the Burning Sands Step Show. It will showcase the talents of African American students from Greek organizations at colleges across in Texas and Louisiana. The competition starts at 7 and will take place in Waco Hall, located on Speight Street on Baylor campus. Tickets are $10.

Thurs, Fri, Sat Feb 6-8 Family & Faith Film Festival

The inaugural Waco Faith & Family Film Festival started yesterday, but there is still plenty of festival for you to enjoy today and tomorrow. 70 films from artists and directors across the country are being screened right here in Waco, several of the films showcase stories of black excellence, family and faith. The films are being shown at churches and locations across Baylor campus and throughout Waco, many of the films are free, a few cost $5 a ticket. Sat Feb 8, 9:30am – Sacred Harp Sing

A couple more fun happenings you won’t want to miss this week -- A Sacred Harp Sing will take place tomorrow at the Great Hall of the Truett Theological Seminary on Baylor Campus. Most of the music featured in the sing-along will be of folk hymns like "Amazing grace, how sweet the sound," "Brethren, we have met to worship" and "What wondrous love is this." The event will run from 9:30am – 3pm, lunch will be provided.

Tues Feb 11 – Tues March 24 – Zumbini

Created by Zumba® and BabyFirst, Zumbini® is a program that combines music, dance and educational tools for 45 minutes of bonding, learning, and fun! The Mayborn Museum is partnering with Zumbini to offer a 6-week Zumbini program here in Waco for parents and children ages 0-6. The program starts Tuesday February 11 and will continue every Tuesday at 9 AM until March 24. Each session includes a songbook and music to continue the fun at home! The whole program is $140 or $125 if you are a member of the Mayborn Museum.
