I Hear America Singing - Women of Folk

This week we feature some of the influential women of folk music.

From the 1940s we have Jean Ritchie singing False Sir John and Ronnie Gilbert singing Venga Jaleo with the Weavers. Gilbert was a huge influence on activist Holly Near, They toured together in the 1980s. Ritchie’s songs have been performed by many people including the trio of Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, and Emmylou Harris. Susan Reed from the 1950s was an influence on Carolyn Hester who in turn inspired Joan Baez and Judy Collins, and Nanci Griffith. Peggy Seeger, Pete’s half-sister, with her feminist songs has influenced many younger ladies to speak out. To hear these and many more, tune into I Hear America Singing.
