Living It - Jefferson Gunn

This month, Living It features Jefferson Gunn — a retired educator, dedicated transit activist, and now a board member with the new local chapter of the National Foundation of the Blind. He stopped by the KWBU studio with his guide dog, Sparky. Jefferson's conversation with Meg digs into the topic of inclusion, independence, and the work still ahead in making our community more accessible for all.

Houston native Jefferson Gunn started his career as a paramedic but had to retool his career as his vision declined because of retinitis pigments. He established the health science as program at La Vega High School and rounded out is career working with community partners to emergency response training at University High. A long-time advocate for accessible transit, Jefferson is now vice president of the Heart of Texas chapter of the Waco Foundation of the Blind.

Meg worked as a community organizer, an adult educator, and a publishing-industry freelancer before launching her children and moving to Waco, where she completed her Master’s degree in Social Work at Baylor in 2018. Having walked through many challenges with disabled loved ones over the years, Meg was in search of strategies to reduce barriers to full community participation for disabled neighbors and their caregivers. So she launched the Amberley Collaborative, which was renamed Mobilize Waco in 2023. Meg is now a social worker with AccentCare Home Health, while continuing to build Mobilize Waco and enjoying life with her husband, their adult children, and their new granddaughter.
